Improved NEH-based heuristic for the blocking flow-shop problem with bicriteria of the makespan and machine utilization

The blocking flow-shop scheduling problem, which is an NP-hard has wide applications in industry. Many studies have focused primarily on single-objective optimization, such as minimizing the makespan or total flow time, insufficient for practical problems. In this study, a problem with bicriteria of and machine utilization considered. A simple constructive heuristic, NEHCG, proposed by developing new priority tie-breaking rules based Nawaz–Enscore–Ham heuristic. rule, quartile deviation job processing times included first rule designed to break ties effectively insertion phase. Then, improved PW_NEHCG, presented combining NEHCG profile-fitting approach. Computational experiments show that heuristics exhibit excellent performance compared other well-known heuristics.
